Did you say ‘Glasgow Girls’? No, this is not about dancing or singing – arts to which the bourgeoisie attached a scandalous reputation at the turn of the 20th century– but rather about the women artists who explored various fields such as drawing, painting, metalwork, ceramics, textiles and so on…
Thanks to the work of Clara Silber within our association, Margaret Macdonald now takes her rightful place alongside her husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. She was part of a group of young women, fellow students at the Glasgow School of Art, who also left their mark on their era through their avant-garde talents in a world largely dominated by men.
As part of European Heritage Days, we have invited Peter Trowles, former curator of the GSA, to come and talk to us about these women, whose history has long been overlooked and who helped define the internationally renowned Glasgow style.
