Hôtel du Midi

Charles Rennie Mackintosh stayed in this hotel during the winter of 1924-1925 with his wife Margaret. It was from here that he visited the area and painted the watercolours ‘Mas Blanc Ontoine,’  ‘A Southern Farm’ and probably ‘Bouletenère’.

Next to this hotel is the ‘double’ chair with reproductions of the watercolours ‘Mas Blanc Ontoine’ and ‘A Southern Farm’.

L’hôtel du Midi” is located on the RN 27 in Ille-sur-têt.

The Mackintosh couple enjoyed their stay at this hotel. They described it as a comfortable, friendly, simple and economical establishment where very good, hearty meals were served.

The building still exists today as a cafe, billiard room and pizza restaurant. It has remained unchanged with its rockwork balconies (a cement mortar composition that imitates nature like the trunks of trees). These dreamlike, baroque creations became popular in the 19th century).
