The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Association in Roussillon was created in February 2004. Since then, its volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring the life and work of Charles and his wife Margaret to a wider and wider audience, notably through the forty or so watercolours that C R Mackintosh painted in Roussillon and the three exhibition-interpretation centres: Port-Vendres, Amélie-les Bains-Palalda and Bélesta.
So what better way to celebrate this anniversary than to pay tribute to another artist, one of our founders, Ian Scott? He was the first vice-president of our association, with Robin Crichton as president and Margaret Hogan as secretary. This Scottish artist, who died in 2013, spent the end of his life in our Roussillon region and set up his gallery on Avenue Castellane in Port-Vendres in the 1990s. You can find out more about his life and his neo-Cubist work by visiting the exhibition devoted to him at the Médiathèque Pere Verdaguer in Port-Vendres from 20th to 28th September*.
But that’s not all: in addition to the opening of the Mackintosh Centre in Port-Vendres for the Heritage Days (exceptionally in the afternoons of Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd ), the association has put together a series of free events for you to enjoy, details of which can be downloaded from our website:
This year, the focus is on design and Mackintosh as designer, with two talks on 21st September: one in the morning by Pierre Content, artist and designer, and the other in the afternoon by Peter Trowles, an undisputed Mackintosh expert who has travelled all the way from Glasgow.
On the afternoon of Sunday 22nd September, Catherine Blin will take us on a tour of Mackintosh design in film. On 25th September, Jacques Raupp, watercolour artist and art teacher, will be leading a watercolour workshop. And finally James Trollope, journalist and writer, will be giving a talk on 27th September on “Rudolph Ihlee”, a painter who stayed in Collioure and was a friend of Mackintosh.
We look forward to welcoming you!
*Exhibition open during library opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm / Saturday, 9am to 1pm.
