The children of Port-Vendres discover Charles Rennie Mackintosh

This March, a 3-part project is underway. It has been created jointly by the Accueil de Loisirs, the Microfolie, the Médiathèque de Port-Vendres and the Association “Lire et Faire Lire,” and is giving children in the Port-Vendres leisure centre the chance to learn about the life and work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It began on 6th March with an entertaining discovery of 5 panels on the Mackintosh trail along the Quai Forgas, the Rue du Soleil and the Route de la Mirande. The children were invited to find details of the watercolours and make their own sketches of the landscapes painted by our artist.

Secondly, at the multimedia library on 13th March (and also on 20th March), a group of young participants put colour on their drawings during a “watercolour” workshop. This was led by our watercolourist (a member of the association’s Board) who introduced them to this technique. They were also able to listen to anecdotes and stories from the life of C R Mackintosh read by readers from the Association “Lire et Faire Lire” and leaf through books on Mackintosh, art and design.

Finally, the last part will take place in parallel, at the Microfolie, also on 13th and 20th March, with stencilling and flocking workshops using models borrowed from C R Mackintosh.
Through these activities, the four partners hope to promote cultural awareness among young people in Port-Vendres. They hope to make them more aware of their cultural heritage and environment by giving new meaning to the landscapes that surround them and the artistic testimonies that punctuate their daily lives.

The “Charles Rennie Mackintosh en Roussillon” association is delighted with this new approach to young people and hopes to extend it to other school groups, in particular secondary school pupils, in a new project due to start at the end of April.
To register your interest, get involved or simply find out more about our association’s many other projects for 2024 (including the celebration of its twentieth anniversary), you can meet us in room 13-14 of the Cultural Centre on Place Castellane for our Annual General Meeting on 22nd March at 5.30pm.

We look forward to seeing you there.
